Meta built a leaderboard to measure AI token consumption. Employees optimized for it. But the real story isn't the funny numbers — it's the 21% of organizations with governance frameworks versus the 75% deploying AI agents without them.
Story 1
Meta Claudeonomics
A dashboard that tracked 85,000 employees' AI token consumption. Employees burned tokens overnight to climb the leaderboard. Mark Zuckerberg didn't rank in the top 250.
Story 2
Trendslop & The Governance Gap
AI confidently recommends the same advice regardless of context. Deloitte surveyed 3,235 leaders. Only 21% have governance frameworks. Krafton CEO used ChatGPT for legal strategy — cost him $250 million in court.
The Pattern
Frederick Taylor, 1911
Scientific Management put stopwatches on factory workers. They optimized for the measurement, not the output. Meta did the same with tokens. 115 years later. Same trap.
Takeaway: The AI Agent Requisition
The 21% with governance didn't get there by accident. They asked five questions before deploying. If you can't answer all five, don't deploy. Or — deploy knowing you're the reason 79% of organizations have no governance.
Five questions before you deploy
- What role does this agent fill? If you can't write it in one paragraph, you haven't decided.
- Who is its named supervisor? Not a team. One person.
- What can it NOT do? Not "be helpful." What decisions are off-limits.
- What outcome — not activity — proves it's working? Not tokens. Not speed. Not decisions per day.
- When do you sunset it? You need an exit criterion before you deploy. Otherwise you'll never get rid of it.
